Tamiya Grasshopper - The Best RC Car for Beginners?

An old classic is still a big winner.

Tamiya Grasshopper

With literally hundreds of RC models on the market, choosing the perfect starter model can be a difficult challange. I've been involved in the RC industry for over 20 years and fortunately not much has changed... at least from a beginners point of view. For a beginner just starting out in RC, my recomendation is a good one. In fact, this is the same model that started my RC career. I still proudly display my beat up old Grasshopper in my office right beside my new, never to be used display Grasshopper. If you were to ask any RC fanatic, at least those over 30, what THEY would choose, most would agree on the Tamiya Grasshopper. Why you say? Because very few RC models embody the perfect mix of simplicity, fun AND affordability like the Grasshopper does.

The Tamiya Grasshopper first arrived in hobby stores in 1984, much to the delight of many a young R/C hobby fanatic (including myself!). The Grasshopper was modeled after the one seater buggies that have been seen tearing up dirt race tracks all across the USA.

Featuring ease of assembly and easy handling, the light Tamiya Grasshopper became an instant hit as the perfect entry vehicle for beginner hobbyists. The model is compatible with a large range of Tamiya add-on parts including ball bearings, metal gears and motor upgrades, making the Tamiya Grasshopper an entry level buggy that can grow with a drivers experience. Feature packed with may great features of the original release kit, this exciting 2WD buggy is a blast both on and off road.

A prefect combination of easy assembly and durable exterior is part of what made the Tamiya Grasshopper such a special model in the 80's and the same holds true today. The tough plastic body is attached to the bathtub resin chasis by screws, creating a solid frame that can handle quite a bit of abuse and agressive driving. Dirt tracks can be driven easily thanks in part to coil spring shocks and an independent swing axle front end and rigid axle rear end suspension system. The differential sealed gearbox stays free of dirt and debris, and overall driving and handling is smooth and predictable. The paddle rear tires are this buggies classic trademark and the 3 piece, grooved front tires provide excellent grip and driving response on any surface. Realistic details including the famous Tamiya Grasshopper driver figure and Tamiya's trademark attention to detail add a touch of fun to your R/C buggy driving experience.

The Tamiya Grasshopper is definatly a classic, must have addition to every R/C model collection. If you are just starting out in the hobby, this model is the perfect buy. I guarantee once you drive a Grasshopper, you'll be forever hooked on R/C. - Shawn Everett, Executive Editor
